Communicating on Midnight Sun

Introduction
Killing and questing are fun, but one of the best parts of MS is the friendly, social atmosphere. There are several ways to communicate with other players but remember that respect is the name of the game.

Talking
Simply put, the various modes of talking are ways to communicate to people who are in the same physical location as you (ie: you see them in the 'look' description of the room) 'say' will be visible to everybody in the room with you. You can also emote the same way using 'emote' instead of 'say'. You can direct a say to a specific person with 'to (theirname)' or make it only visible to them with 'whisper (theirname)'

Emoting
In addition to the 'emote' command for people in the same room as you, ie typing 'emote waves hello' would display 'YourName waves hello' you can emote into any channel you can use normally by adding an e to the end of the chat command. So to emote on 'chat' you would use 'chate' to emote on novice would be 'novicee' and so on.

Channels
Channels are the means by which you can communicate with people who aren't in the room with you. At the start you will have access to four main channels:

Chat: This is a general chat channel visible to all players who are tuned in.

Tell: Using 'tell (player) (message)' you communicate to only that person much like with 'say' but they can be anywhere. This consumes some spellpoints.

Novice: This is a general chat channel visible to new players, and higher level 'helper' players and a great place to ask questions.

Shout: A shout is globally visible to all players, it uses a lot of spellpoints

Other Channels
As you progress in the game, more channels will become available to you. Each guild has their own guild-specific channel, one of the game's quests includes access to a channel as a reward. There are channels for players who've reached certain milestones of level progression.

Attitude
Communicating can be the very best part of Midnight Sun since it is a mud made up of fun and interesting individuals. If you think something could be offensive, keep it to yourself and contribute positively to the mud. You will be rewarded by making a lot of friends!
